Old Queries, Part 10

HARTWELL/BLANKENSHIP
John HARTWELL was in Giles Co. 1812 when he had a survey made. Is he the one who married a Frances (maiden name unknown)? They had 4 children – son Andrew was in Mercer Co. together with sisters and mother.
Andrew married Jane BLANKENSHIP – nothing known about her.
Would like anything on John, Frances and Jane.

Holton FANNON married Nancy Louisa HARMAN 1844 in Giles County. Nancy was born in 1824, mother’s name was Permelia or Pamela, father unknown.
In 1847 Holton and Nancy moved to Andrew Co., MO; in 1850 Census they are in Nodaway Co., MO as is a Hezakia Fanning with his wife Malinda who was probably a sister of Nancy.

CRAWFORD
My gg-gf was a William CRAWFORD. One of William’s sons, my g-gf Josiah Adam CRAWFORD, was reportedly born at “Sinking Creek, Virginia” in 1810. Until now I have mostly concentrated my search in the Botetourt/Craig part of the Sinking Creek of the New with little result. My wife recently came across a reference to CRAWFORDs in Clover Bottom, drawing our attention to the Montgomery/Giles end of the Sinking Creek valley. Is anybody working on CRAWFORDs in that vicinity?

WILLIAMS/FRY/DUNCAN
My great-grandparents were Captain John Madison WILLIAMS (called Madison) of Pembroke, Giles Co. and Catherine Suzanne FRY, supposedly from near Staunton, Va. My grandmother was their daughter India Minerva (WILLIAMS) DUNCAN, wife of George Clifton DUNCAN of Waiteville, WV. I cannot find any information on this couple. I have no birth, death or marriage dates, only the above information. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family?
I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

MARTIN/MEADOWS/STAFFORD/DURHAM
I am looking for information about my Giles County MARTIN ancestors. My g-g-grandmother was Frances L. MARTIN, born 31 August 1832 and died 23 May 1911. I am interested in ascertaining exactly who her parents were. In Frances’s marriage record to Allen Parkinson MEADOWS, Frances’s parents are listed as John and Elizabeth MARTIN, and the place of the marriage is listed as the Irish Settlement. In other marriage records, I found other children of John and Elizabeth listed as Susan S. MARTIN (who married Joseph STAFFORD) and Mollie C. MARTIN (who married William DURHAM). Both of these daughters are also listed as having been married in the Irish Settlement.
My questions are: Where is the Irish Settlement and what families lived there? And shall I assume the MARTINs are Irish? and finally, most importantly: Does anyone recognize this MARTIN family? I would like to know more about them, but have been daunted by the frequency of the name. I would be grateful for any leads.
Thanks

SNODGRASS/BASHAM
I am searching for the ancestors of Titham SNODGRASS. He was born in Giles Co. ca. 1815 and moved to Boone Co VA/WV where he died in April of 1860. I suspect that he was a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Unknown) SNODGRASS but have not been able to substantiate this. Titham married Ruhamah BASHAM 26 March 1838 and had six children.
Any assistance with this person would be greatly appreciated

BOWEN/LAFON
I am searching for the ancestors of a John BOWEN, who apparently married an Elizabeth “Betsy” LAFON in Botetourt Co. (present-day Craig Co.) ca. 1770 . John was born in either VA or NC ca. 1745 and resided, initially, with his wife Elizabeth (born ca. 1750, NC?) in the Craigs Creek area of present-day Craig Co. Their daughter, and my direct ancestor, Mary “Polly” BOWEN (born ca. 1776), married a John LAFON (born ca. January 1775, NC) in July 1797 and they subsequently settled in the Cover Hollow area of Giles Co. John LAFON and Polly apparently resided on their Clover Hollow (LAFON) farm until their respective deaths in 1840 and 1849.
Any ancestral or family-related information on John BOWEN or Elizabeth LAFON would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
