Connecticut ratified the Constitution on 9 January 1788, becoming the 5th state. Originally the home of the Wappinger Confederacy, the Connecticut River Colony was organized in 1636 by settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1662 a Royal Charter was issued, and in 1686, the Connecticut Colony became part of the Dominion of New England in America until its dissolution in 1689.
