SANDERS
My great grandfather, William Clefton SANDERS was supposedly born near Mountain Lake in Giles County, Virginia on 9 November 1848. He died in Marion, Smyth Co., Va. in 1957
His first marriage was to Maggie HODGE in 1898. That union produced one child, Annie Mae, born 25 December 1884. Maggie Hodge died shortly after giving birth.
Word of mouth passage of family history says that he may have been the offspring of an Indian woman named Sanders (Saunders) and a HOFFMAN (HUFFMAN) man.
In the 1900 Census for the Pembroke section of Giles County, there is a listing for the household of William H. Huffman, 54, single. In his household is a Mary Sanders, 46, listed as a house servant and Annie M. Saunders, 6, granddaughter. She is the right age to have possibly been the Annie Mae born to the first marriage of William C. Sanders.
William C. Sanders’ second marriage was to Josephine Swecker Copeland. Her maiden name was Swecker and she had been married previously to a Mr. Copeland.
Family history also says that William C. Sanders had four siblings, three boys and one girl. One of the boys may have been named Calvin and the girl may have been named Maggie.
Anyone who has information about this family or anyone connected to them, is urged to contact me.
In advance,I thank you for your assistance.
