Schmidt’s Counsel Will Bring Out His New Defense
The taking of testimony in the trial of Hans Schmidt for the murder of Anna Aumueller was resumed today in the Criminal Branch of the Supreme Court before Justice Davis. By order of the Court women were excluded from the courtroom, and a crowd of females clamoring for admission were driven from the door by the police.
The State is using the same witnesses as in the former trial, in which the jury disagreed, and in about the same order. Justice Davis is hurrying the case, and the evidence is being gathered much more expeditiously than in the first trial.
A new line of defense has been indicated by the cross-examination of Schmidt’s counsel. The intimate that Anna Aumueller died following premature childbirth and was not killed by Schmidt, but admit that he cut up the body and threw the pieces into the North River.
