Confederate Dead at Charlottesville, Virginia

A List of the South Carolina Soldiers who are buried at the University Graveyard near Charlottesville, Virginia, as published in The Charleston Daily News, 6 December 1866. The list was accompanied by a letter explaining the origins or the list and a note about the grave numbers. The letter also mentions a plan of the graveyard, but the plan was not reproduced in the newspaper and it is not clear if a copy of the plan accompanied the letter and the list or where it could be found (presumably at that time the plan, or a copy of it, was held at the University of Virginia).

Mr. Editor: Accompanying this you will find a list of the South Carolina soldiers who are buried at the University Graveyard, near Charlottesville, Va. The public are indebted to Mr. Scharf, artist at the University of Virginia, who, after six months of constant work, gathered from the various hospital records the names of all the Confederate dead who are buried at the University Graveyard, arranged them alphabetically, and drawing a plan of the yard, by which any grave can be found; the numbers refer to the grave; those left blank have been removed.
It may be well for me here to state that the Literary Societies of the University of Virginia, the Washington and Jefferson, are endeavoring to erect a monument to the Confederate dead at that place. To further their work, they hope and expect aid from all the States. Committees were appointed for most of the States; I am not certain but think there is no committee for this State. All persons desiring to aid them in their noble work can do so by enclosing the amount and directing it to the Jefferson Society of the University of Virginia.
