Pearisburg Bridge, 1901

Extra No. 3 left Radford for this city forty-five minutes late, but upon reaching Pearisburg found orders to return to Radford awaiting it. It seems that new abutments are being built at the bridge just this side of Pearisburg, and the temporary supports in use while the work was in progress were washed away, causing the bridge to sink.
